Artist Statement

My work reflects the experience of living in the high country of the Colorado Plateau,
among the canyons and mountains of central southern Utah. My representations of
the landscape always begin on the land itself, painting or sketching en plein air, but
the artistic process pulls me into the studio and onto the painting surface. The
impetus for each piece arises from observation of the country in which I live, but
each painting takes on a life of its own in a series of actions and reactions,
combined with memory and mood. Color, composition, and the plasticity of the paint
are my primary tools.

Thus, each work goes beyond its specific geography to reflect a more abstract
reality. I intend my surfaces to engage the viewer and to challenge perceptions, to
go beyond the landscape to provoke a reaction to the painting itself.
